SHCHEKINOAZOT’S NEW PROJECT APPROVED AT PUBLIC HEARINGS[31.05.2019]
Public hearings and a discussion of the construction of an ammonia and carbamide production facility (with a planned production capacity of 525,000 and 700,000 tons per year, respectively) were recently held in Shchekino district at the Shchekinoazot production site. The future plant was presented by Vyacheslav Kurganov, Deputy Director General and Project Manager.
“The investment project provides for creation of an integrated ammonia and carbamide production plant with a capacity of 1,500 tons per day and 2,000 tons per day, respectively, as part of the company’s long-term development program.”
On March 15, 2019, the EPC contract for ammonia and carbamide production complex was signed with China National Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNCEC).
CNCEC is a Chinese state-owned company specializing in engineering and construction of chemical plants, both in China and abroad. The company includes several design institutes and construction organizations with extensive experience in design and construction works.
This complex will produce liquid ammonia and granulated carbamide (urea). Liquid ammonia NH3 contains 82.3 % of nitrogen. Ammonia is mainly used for the production of nitrogen fertilizers (nitrate and ammonium sulfate, carbamide), polymers, nitric acid, soda, and other products of the chemical industry. Liquid ammonia is used as a solvent. In refrigeration engineering, it is used as a refrigerant (R717) in ammonia refrigeration units.
Carbamide (urea) fertilizer is number one among many nitrogen fertilizers used in agriculture for pre-sowing and subsequent fertilization of plants. Carbamide is one of the most highly concentrated nitrogen fertilizers (its content in the product is up to 46.2 %). This is the reason why it is widely used for soil fertilization. This substance does not burn the leaves during soil dressing. It is mainly produced in the form of white granules.
In addition to resins, adhesives, and plastics, it is used for manufacturing fabrics — it is added to the treatment composition, giving the material higher strength. Carbamide is also used during paper production process to improve its mechanical properties.
It is also used to produce various drugs (in particular, sleeping and sedative pills), toothpastes, cosmetic creams, disinfectants.
In the leather industry, carbamide is successfully used for white leather tanning.
It is used to impregnate wood, increase wood resistance to rotting, purify gases at garbage processing enterprises.
The food industry also uses carbamide. The substance is added to flour or dough. This additive enhances taste and aroma.
The key raw material of the complex is natural gas. Auxiliary materials and energy resources are delivered to the facility via the plant’s existing networks.
Ammonia production will be carried out using HALDOR TOPSOE (Denmark) technology, while carbamide production will be supported by the use of STAMICARBON (the Netherlands) technology. Both existing and newly designed production units use European or Japanese technological process control and monitoring systems. The scheme provides automatic control (gas analyzers) of pollutants before their discharge into the air.
The new production complex includes the most advanced and innovative technologies for equipment designing and manufacturing. The process conditions are selected in such a way as to ensure reliable, optimal, and stable operation of the production unit, taking into account local conditions, cost of raw materials, and specifics of support systems.
One of the ways to resolve the environmental issues of ammonia and carbamide production is to use process schemes that minimize air pollution. For this purpose, the ammonia production unit is equipped with a selective purification reactor, while the carbamide production unit is equipped with a highly efficient scrubber, which allows reaching lower concentrations of harmful substances than the established sanitary standards.
The implementation of this engineering solution is the first and the only one among similar plants in CIS countries.
To eliminate discharges of contaminated condensate of process steam into the sewage system, the project provides for its reuse in the process, which means this technology is zero-discharge.
The project implementation will include:
- the creation of a new complex of production units at Shchekinoazot that meets the highest international standards in terms of the environment and energy saving;
- the organization of deep processing of manufacturing products at the company’s site;
- the creation of additional jobs with decent salaries;
- the expansion of the company’s product range and its presence at the new global and domestic markets of mineral fertilizers.
The company wants continue implementing projects on reducing the burden on the environment, supporting public organizations and local authorities to create comfortable living conditions in the region.
The new complex will employ 380 people.
It’s planned to launch a new production plant in the second quarter of 2023.
