WORLD-CLASS DEMO EXAM [17.06.2021]
Shchekino Polytechnic College, a social partner of Shchekinoazot, hosts demonstration exams in Laboratory Chemical Analysis and Industrial Automation competencies
Shchekino Polytechnic College was one of the first in the Tula Region to be awarded certificates as a Specialised Centre for Chemical Analysis and a WorldSkills Russia Training Centre four years ago. This is where the demonstration exam is held, not only for students at SPC but also for those studying at the Novomoskovsk and Yefremov colleges. From April to June this year, 192 people will take a demo exam in the Laboratory Chemical Analysis competence, a midterm assessment or a final assessment at the SPC.
The laboratory is equipped with fourteen workstations in full accordance with WorldSkills standards.
This week, 3rd-year students studying Quality Management of Products, Processes and Services took a demo exam in Laboratory Chemical Analysis. They studied a vocational module, did an internship at Shchekinoazot, and finished with a midterm assessment, that is, seven hours of on-site work. The results are to come in by the end of the month.
Shchekino Polytechnic was the first in the region to start training in Instrumentation Control, offered at the college since 2017. This year marks the first graduation in the Tula region. Graduates of the Instrumentation and Automation Technician programme at SPC took an examination in Industrial Automation, a new competence for the college. Since 2021, the SPC has been a certified centre for holding the demonstration examination in this competence. For future I&A technicians, the state certification comes in the form of a demonstration examination.
This competence encompasses everything related to industrial automation. That includes designing logical circuits, installation of input and output devices, programmable logic controllers and more. The job of an I&A technician is system installation, maintenance and repair. The tasks of the Industrial Automation demo examination are rather challenging. The examinee must assemble a real switching circuit using a diagram, connect the motor and install the programmable relay. In this chain, elements of production automation are tuned.
In 2021, another region's first will take place at the SPC, namely, the graduation of specialists in the field of polymer composite product technology. The composites students have mastered 3D modelling and all the relevant computer equipment during their studies. They will have to take a two-part demo exam, including a final theoretical qualification paper and a practical part, that is, simulating a situation, feeding it to print and getting a real-world copy of the programmed product.
The college is convinced that the future is bright for specialists in polymer production. Almost two-thirds of the current graduates in Polymer Composite Production Technology and Products and Process and Service Quality Management are already working at Shchekinoazot JSC.
All of the professions taught at SPC are on the so-called TOP-50 list of the most sought-after jobs on the labour market. In accordance with the new standard, also implemented in 2021, the defence of a diploma thesis consists of both theoretical and practical parts. Graduates have to demonstrate in practice what they have learned, in the workshop and in the lab. The demo exam is a real opportunity for graduates to showcase the competencies and skills acquired during their studies.
When applying for a job, the competence sheet one is issued after successfully passing the demo exam and the number of points one receives, indicating the percentage of practical skills one has mastered, will tell the employer about the actual professional capabilities of the applicant.
In the current academic year, chemistry programme graduates have taken a demo exam in Laboratory Chemical Analysis twice: the midterm exam in December and the final exam in May. Now they are preparing to defend their diploma projects.
