At normal temperature and atmospheric pressure it is a colorless gas with a characteristic ethereal odor, reminiscent of the smell of chloroform.

Dimethyl ether has a narcotic effect, an irritating effect on the skin, mucous membranes of the eyes and upper respiratory tract. In case of poisoning, there is weakness, drowsiness, headache, dizziness, facial flushing, asphyxiation, loss of coordination of movements and vision, nausea. Inhalation of high concentrations - loss of consciousness. In case of contact with the skin - frostbite of the skin (burn).
PRODUCTION
The preparation takes place during the process of methanol dehydration on the catalyst successively in two adiabatic reactors with an energy-efficient heat exchange scheme, and then goes through the process of separating the resulting dimethyl ether from the reaction products in the distillation column. The finished product is DME aerosol (perfumery) with a mass fraction of DME - 99.99%, odorless.
The peculiarity of the DME plant is that it is built according to the licensor’s scheme of the company Thyssenkrupp Uhde Engineering Services GmbH, but improved in comparison with the existing plants in other countries. This was made possible thanks to the existing methanol production at the Shchekinoazot industrial site, where in the methanol distillation unit, the vat residue of the DME rectification column is processed. Thus, the production of dimethyl ether continues the technological chain of processing methanol into a product with a higher added value.
APPLICATIONS
Aerosol DME is a highly purified, colorless, chemically inert gas that is odorless and tasteless.
Used as a propellant in the manufacture of aerosols of a wide range of applications (paints, hair sprays, construction foam, etc.).
The propellant has a special dissolving ability and acts as a solvent. This makes ether a very valuable component in formulations of sparingly soluble aerosols. In addition, having a higher partial pressure compared to the propane-butane mixture, dimethyl ether allows to obtain a fine dispersion and more complete emptying of the cylinder.
Another field of application of dimethyl ether is the production of extruded polystyrene foam (XPS), which is used as a heat insulator in the construction of buildings and structures.
The advantages of dimethyl ether over hydrocarbon propellants: no odor; higher partial pressure; fine dispersion; environmental friendliness.
The advantages of perfume DME over technical product: the proportion of the main substance - 99.99%, odorless.
Qualitative indicators of dimethyl ether are consistent with the requirements of TU 20.14.63-052-05761695-2017.
