Hexamine (CH2)6N4, hexamethylenetetramine, urotropine, 1,3,5,7-Tetraazatricyclo[126.96.36.199,7]-decane) is white crystalline powder with slight ammonia odor. Becomes charred at 280°C, sublimates at 230°C in vacuum. It is well soluble in water and carbon bisulphide, moderately soluble in alcohol and chloroform, little soluble in ethers and benzine. Hexamine is prepared in the chemical industry by means of the reaction of formaldehyde and ammonia.
Hexamine is normally used in production of:
- antioxidants, modifiers, and inhibitors,
- thermal insulation,
- industrial products of special purposes
